Acne

Acne is a very common skin condition characterised by blackheads, whiteheads and pus-filled spots (pustules). It often starts at puberty and varies in severity from a few spots on the face, neck, back and chest - which most adolescents will have at some time - to a more significant problem that may cause scarring and impact self-confidence. Acne can also develop for the first time in people in their late twenties or even thirties. It occasionally occurs in young children as blackheads and/or pustules on the cheeks or nose.

Treatment: After a detailed consultation with one of our doctors a full treatment course is prescribed. This could include a lifestyle assessment, dietary supplements or adjustments as well as an appropriate programme of laser or other treatments.

Actinic Keratoses

Solar or Actinic keratoses are areas of sun-damaged skin found predominantly on sun-exposed parts of the body, particularly the backs of the hands and forearms, the face and ears, the scalp in balding men and the lower legs in women. The term keratosis refers to thickened skin. They are usually harmless but there is a very small risk of some actinic keratoses progressing to a form of skin cancer, actinic keratoses are not contagious.

Treatment: liquid nitrogen, electrocautery, excision.

Birth Marks

Contrary to their name, birthmarks aren't always present at birth. Some, such as a hemangioma, develop weeks later. And though most are permanent, a few types of birthmarks fade as a child grows. Most birthmarks are harmless, but some may require treatment for cosmetic reasons or because of rapid growth. Still others may be a sign of an underlying disease.

Treatment: After assessment of the nature of the birthmark the doctor will advise you whether to leave it alone or whether at a later stage treatment may be needed. If required a laser treatment may be prescribed.

Hair Loss: Alopecia or Hair Loss as it is commonly called, can affect just your scalp or your entire body. It can be the result of heredity, certain medications or an underlying medical condition. Treatment: Hair loss treatments may include medications like Finasteride and minoxidil, especially for male pattern hair loss. Eczema

Eczema shows itself as: Patches of chronically itchy, dry, thickened skin, usually on the hands, neck, face, and legs, but it can occur anywhere. In children, the inner creases of the knees and elbows are often involved. If scratched, dry patches of skin and open sores with crusts may develop and may get infected.

Treatment: This can range from switching to a mild soap and moisturizer, some people with severe eczema may benefit from taking baths with a small amount of bleach added to the water, Stress reduction. Hydrocortisone creams or ointments or prescription creams and antihistamines. Your doctor may prescribe oral corticosteroids. At ADLC we also offer Ultraviolet light therapy.

Moles & Dysplastic Nevi

Dysplastic Nevi are moles that are larger than average and irregular in shape sometimes they could increase the chances of developing into melanoma – a serious form of skin cancer.

Treatment: Atypical (unusual) moles should be seen by your doctor/dermatologist. If needed, the mole, and some of the skin around it, may be removed for examination in the laboratory.

Pigmentation disorders

Skin pigmentation disorders affect the colour of your skin which gets its natural colour from a pigment called melanin. Special cells (melanocytes) in the skin make melanin. When these cells become damaged or unhealthy, it affects melanin production. This may cause hyper or hypo-pigmentation. Some pigmentation disorders affect just patches of skin. Others affect your entire body. Conditions can include: vitiligo, age spots, etc.

Treatment: could include: chemical peels, Dermabrasion, laser therapy.

Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a skin disease that causes itchy or sore patches of thick, red skin with silvery scales. These can occur on elbows, knees, scalp, back, face, palms and feet, as well as other parts of your body. A problem with your immune system causes psoriasis. It may be challenging to diagnose at times as it often looks like other skin diseases. Your doctor might need to look at a small skin sample under a microscope.

Treatment: Depending on the nature and severity of your condition your doctor may prescribe a combination of dietary as well as topical applications in addition to phototherapy. More advanced treatments are administered with biologic agents in an injectable form.

Rosacea

Rosacea is a long-term disease that affects your skin and sometimes your eyes. It causes redness and pimples and is more common in women and people with fair skin. It most often affects middle-aged and older adults. In most cases, rosacea only affects the face. Symptoms can include frequent redness of the face, or flushing, small, red lines, Acne, red, dry, itchy eyes and sometimes vision problems

Treatment: Treatments include medicines as well as laser treatment using a Pulsed Dye Laser, radiofrequency ablation, or dermabrasion.

Skin Eruptions (Rashes)

A skin eruption or rash is any area of irritated, swollen skin that may be itchy, red, painful, and/or inflamed. A rash is a symptom a variety of different medical problems from irritating substances to allergies or contact dermatitis caused by touching an irritant, such as a chemical, or something you are allergic to. Because rashes can be caused by many different things, it's important to figure out what kind you have before you treat it.

Treatment: Your doctor will diagnose and advise the right course of treatment which could include lotions, baths, cortisone creams and antihistamines. In some cases targeted laser therapy may be recommended depending on the condition.

Scar Revision & Keloids

Scars caused by surgery, injury, burns, or accidents can be removed or revised through a number of different processes. Keloids are scars that are thicker and of a different texture than the rest of the skin.

Treatment: Various treatments can be used to minimise the way a scar looks that is why we call it scar revision. These include dermabrasion, laser treatments, chemical peels or steroid injections. Your doctor will advise you as to which will work best for you.

Sun Damage

This is caused by years of exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun resulting in premature skin ageing, a tendency to easy bruising, thick skin, coarse wrinkles, especially on the back of the neck, forearms and back of the hands. The décolleté area is usually affected too (poikiolderma).

Treatment: Certain procedures can remove or reduce the effects of sun damage these include but aren't limited to dermabrasion, laser treatment; including resurfacing, certain chemical peels, etc.

Vitiligo

Vitiligo is a condition in which your skin loses melanin, the pigment that determines the colour of your skin, hair and eyes. It occurs when the cells that produce melanin die or no longer form melanin, causing slowly enlarging white patches of irregular shapes to appear on your skin. Vitiligo affects all races, but may be more noticeable in people with darker skin. It usually starts as small areas of pigment loss that spread with time.

Treatmen: Treatment helps to arrest further deterioration or slow the progression of pigment loss. Other treatments offered by ADLC include phototherapy, Narrowband ultraviolet B (UVB) therapy, and some laser therapies.

Warts

Warts are growths on your skin caused by an infection with human papilloma virus, or HPV. Types of warts include: Common warts, which often appear on your fingers, Plantar warts, which show up on the soles of your feet, Genital warts, which are a sexually transmitted disease, Flat warts, which appear in places you shave frequently.

Treatment: If they hurt or bother you, warts can be removed through: chemical skin treatments, freezing, surgical and laser treatments.
